FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE?
ØIt is a composite material consisting of cement, water, fine aggregates and discontinuous discrete fibers is known as fiber reinforced concrete.
ØPlain concrete has very low tensile strength, only about one-tenth of its compressive strength.
ØConcrete undergoes significant volumetric changes cause internal stresses within the concrete matrix, due to which micro-cracks get developed in the concrete. The presence of such micro-cracks at the mortar-aggregate interface is responsible for the tensile failure of concrete. these micro-cracks propagate and open up resulting in inelastic deformation of the concrete.
ØThe closely spaced and dispersed fibers are added to the concrete, it obstructs the propagation of cracks. The concrete with dispersed fiber is known as fiber reinforced concrete.
ØVariety of fiber materials are used in concrete such as steel, glass, cotton and synthetic materials such as polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene, and nylon was used in concrete.
ØWhen fibers are added to the concrete, it increases various mechanical properties such as toughness, ductility, flexural resistance, tensile strength and shear resistance.
ADVANTAGES OF FRC
ØResistance to crack propagation.
ØResistance to thermal and moisture stresses.
ØIncreased ductility.
ØDecrease permeability.
ØDecrease mix-water bleed rate.
All these enhancements depend on the type of fiber used and the concentration in the mix.
