AMERICAN METHOD

In This Method A Drift Driven Into The Top Of The Tunnel, The Drift Supported By Laggings, Caps, And Two Vertical Posts. The Sides Of The Drift Are Then Widened And Additional Support Is Provided Using Timber Planks And Struts.

The Process Of Widening Continued Till It Reaches The Springing Level, Wall Plates Fixed At The Springing Level, Which Turn Supported By Vertical Posts.

The Vertical Posts Now Occupy The Entire Roof Level, The Posts Supporting The Drift Can Then Removed And Tunneling Work Continued Further In A Similar Manner.

American Method Suitable For Large Sized Highway And Railway Tunnels.

It Does Not Required Heavy Timbers, Involves Simple Operation.

However American Method Unsuitable For Tunnels Of Flat Bottom.

Then Sides And Benching Cleared & Tunnel Lining Started.
