SOIL CLASSIFICATION

SOIL CLASSIFICATION

vThere are 4 types of Soil classification:-
1)   IS Particle Size soil Classification
2)  HRB:- Highway Research Board Classification
3)  USCS :- Unified Soil Classification System
4)  ISCS :- Indian Standard Classification System
1)  IS Particle Size Soil Classification:-

2)  HRB:- Highway Research Board Classification:-

Suitable for Highway pavement design.
According to HRB classification soil are divided into groups called as ‘Group Numbers’.
i.e. Group  A1 = Gravel
                  A2 =
                    .
                    .
                    .
                   A6 = Black Cotton Soil
                   A7 = Organic Soil
Higher the group number lower the Performance
·       Group Index  (GI) :-
A)   % finer then 75µ
B)   Atterberg Limit
       Higher the group index lower the performance
3)   USCS :- Unified Soil Classification System:-
This system based on,
a)   Particle Size Distribution
b)  Atterberg Limit
c)   Compressibility
4)  ISCS :- Indian Standard Classification System
    This system based on,
a)   Particle size distribution
b)  Atterberg limit
c)    Compressibility
